What a great day out for the eldest of my Stalinists. She too would be shaking a fist in the air at Gorby for all the fun she has missed.

I believe this is Catherine O'Flynn's blog, though I cannot see your name anywhere. I want to tell you that today I finished reading What was Lost. I live in Queensland, in Australia, and the book was in our library. I really enjoyed the story and how you pieced the mystery altogether. The local lingo over there that is your 'voice' in the book was a bit distracting to an Aussie (eg 'He was sat.." rather than "He sat...) but that's not a negative at all, just pulled me up a bit when I read it. I enjoyed the story, but particularly how you had the reader know your characters so well and how they interlinked throughout the story. We are all interlinked. Little Kate was a child alone in the world who could not understand why other kids her age could not do things for themselves. She'd had to grow up fast, but she didn't survive unfortunately. I hope this is not a true story. I believe the shopping centre is true...but it is unbelievably huge. In my village, I walk to the shops which are one street from my home and I avoid these major shopping centres where I cannot see the daylight. All the best with your writing which I hope will continue with the same success as What was Lost. Congratulations. Jill Marley.

Hello there,</></>I'm researching an article on Barcelona (and Sitges) as an area to work in creatively. I was wondering if I might be able to ask you some questions about that, as I seem to remember you spent quite some time there writing. I hope you don't mind my making contact this way!</></>Best,</>Catherine Bray</></>-- </></>Catherine Bray</>Commissioning Editor</>catherine.bray@gmail.com</>www.channel4.com/4talentcentral</>http://catherinebray.wordpress.com/</>twitter.com/4talent</>+44(0)7908 783 475

I have noted a similar caution growing within myself from the <>inside<> of the car. As an 18-year-old courier, I would put the pedal to the metal and fly along the country roads of the Northampton > Peterborough > Bedford > Northampton triangle, ripping past any slowpokes who had the temerity to get in my way.</>Now, not even a clear, straight road stretching from my front wheels to the horizon is enough to coax me into overtaking even the most ambling of tractors; I will <>always<> brake to observe Hilton's clearly typoed 30mph "speed" limit; and at any sign of a pedestrian, my right foot lurches left to 'cover' the brake pedal, just as my driving instructor Merv 'the swerve' taught me.</>The downside? I am an angrier, more bitter, more frustrated driver with a far higher blood pressure than ever I was when I would sail past with a pip pip and a byeeee.</>The upside? If you and I ever meet, I in my car, you on your shoes, I am sure we will take so long to reach one another, you will have decided not to bother crossing in the first place.

You'll be pleased to note that Bridgnorth has a surfeit of sweetshops. In the High Town quarter-mile alone there are three. One of them (under Northgate) smells like old ladies, and consequently makes the sweets taste like the smell of old ladies (I pick my words carefully here). The second (Listley Street) has branched out into selling 'tobacco' tins with marijuana leaves rendered on the front, and hubbly-bubblies. These sit knowingly among the sherbert bon bons and rhubarb and custards. The third sits proudly on prime tourist estate on Cartway, just on the way to the funicular railway. This is a good, clean shop. An ambassador for the town. And it's pleasantly small.

Some sweet shops lasted a little longer than the early 80s. Near my school there was a small sweet shop owned by the mysteriousy named ´Ma Witt´. Her shop was tiny and full of jars of all the sweets you mentioned, available by the quarter. This was the mid 90s. She had a similarly geriatric sidekick called Madge, who effectively acted as a bouncer, making sure no one disobeyed the childlike handwritted sign on the door - 'only two schoolchildren at a time'. Ma Witt's customer service skills remained firmly rooted in the 'children should be seen and not heard' past. There was a lot of theft from this establishment, even though her dog, Curly was always there keeping watch. It was a rare treat if you bought a quarter of Cola Cubes that didn't contain one of his hairs.
